I’m thrilled and want to share:
I was very excited when I learned about Brenda Hill’s new book, The House on Serpent Lake. I knew I was going to be in for a treat for two reasons; the first being that I love a good ghost story, and the second, that this one was written by one of my favorite authors. After having read it, all I can say is that The House on Serpent Lake lived up to my high expectations. And then some!
The story opens as Eric Peterson and his new bride, Lindsay, leave their California condo and head to rural Minnesota to inspect the family estate, which Eric has inherited from his aunt. From the opening pages the reader gets the sense that all is not as it should be in the grand, if neglected, old mansion on Serpent Lake. At first it’s small things; flickering lights, running water, the hint of Bay Rum aftershave. But as the story progresses, the evidence becomes too much to dispute. Eric and Lindsay Peterson’s new home is haunted, and the ghost wants more than just to rattle a few chains. Indeed, as the weeks pass, he will shake Lindsay’s life to its very foundation.
The writing is superb. The delightful descriptions of the house, the lake, and the small town of Crosby are spot-on and the cast of characters are well-drawn and felt real enough to be my own neighbors and friends. The story flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next, pulling me along in its wake until I was lost in a world that, though incredible, seemed as real as my own. That’s the magic of Brenda Hill!
I could not put the story down until I had devoured every last, eerily delicious page. I’d be remiss if I didn’t confess that some of the scenes were a bit sexy for my Victorian palette, but even so, I highly recommend The House on Serpent Lake to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romance.
